WHAT'S NEW</u>

As mentioned previously, I joined my friend Duncan's comic project, Machine Dragon, about a year ago and together we're slowly working on bringing his sci-fi comic series into existence. Things are a little slow right now since we're both busy finishing up our semester at George Mason University, but in a few weeks we should be back to working on it. But since Duncan's left the project so under wraps for such a long time, he hasn't really had any time to drum up a fanbase.
So I figured maybe I could garner up some supports for me and Duncan right here on DeviantArt. Well, it's up to me since Duncan got rid of his DeviantArt site ages ago. So for anyone who likes sci-fi and anime, you will definitely like the series we're working on.

For anyone interested go to www.machinedragon.com and sign up to join the manga blog and the forum. No one else but Duncan and I are on those things and it's boring just talking to each other and no one else. On the manga blog we post up new comic-related stuff, reviews on comics and music and art. On the forum we discuss about advancements in the comic series, exchange suggestions about how to improve the comic project, and post new artwork.

If you have any questions, contact me on this site, or my email (jhaumann86@gmail.com), or contact the website at contact@machinedragon.com

MUSIC REVIEW</u>

Album Title: 712
Artist: Shonen Knife
Label: Gasatanka Records (Japan)
              Rockville Records (USA)
Year Released: 1991

Although many would disagree with me, Japan in my opinion has not produced nearly as many legendary rock acts as the U.K., USA, or even Sweden for that matter. Maybe I'm just a jerk and a square that doesn't see a huge amount of appeal in the hundreds of porcelain-faced pop stars and garish visual-kei rock bands this archipelago nation has cranked out in the past 15 years. But among the few that hold the legendary status to me is the all-female pop-punk trio Shonen Knife. Before Shonen Knife existed, there weren't all too many girls in Japanese rock music. Their influence can be seen on all of the Japanese girl-groups that followed them such as Judy & Mary and Puffy AmiYumi. Here in the states, the band gained a small following and was even loved by Kurt Cobain and Sonic Youth.

"712", released in 1991, was the band's fifth album and the last album the band made before switching to a major label. Throughout the album you'll find the band's signature catchy, cute pop rock tackling such subjects as food ("Diet Run"), not wanting to go into work ("Lazybone"),conspicuous consumerism ("Baggs", co-written with members of the band L7), and their hometown ("My Favorite Town Osaka"). The self-titled beginning track, "Shonen Knife" is a rap song about the issues of that time built around a continuous loop of a drumbeat sample from the ELO song "Don't Bring Me Down". The album also features a couple of nice cover songs: The Beatles' "Rain" and "Faith Healer",a song by the band Big Dipper. Standing out from the cute pop-punk is the track "White Flag", which is some quick burst of intense pure punk energy.

Regardless, I wouldn't recommend this album to people who can't stand happy music. Sorry to all the mopes among you. The band's adorable chipmunk-y vocals might drive some people up a wall. But for everyone else, this album is a fine piece of pop songcraft and among the best of Japanese rock music.
