As part an assignment for my Mapping 110 class at George Mason University titled "Maps In The Wild", I photographed examples of maps out in the public. One of them was the giant metal globe located outside of the Leisure World retirement community located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
It is even accurately detailed with mountain ranges. Instead of half-assing it, Leisure World definitely splurged on their giant globe.

I was told that Del Webb, founder of Leisure World, bought these globes from the 1965-66 New York World's Fair and had one relocated to the Georgia Avenue entrance of his 55+ community in Silver Spring, Maryland after construction was completed around 1970. I live there and enjoy seeing it every time I drive by.
